Unforgiven

oh go on, forgive him

Now this is a timeless film. It is also Clint at his most Clint. It’s like Godfather or something, it’s weird to think that I saw it on video when it came out and it was a new film because even though I didn’t get it and saw it as an action film at the time, I do remember just thinking that it had always been there.
Cormac McCarthy is good on this lol. It’s like it’s in the stones and someone just pulled it out.
But anyway. I rewatched and am writing about it because I had this discussion with my brother about it and he had this observation that I disagreed with that Clint was actually the bad guy. This touches on something so bear with me.

bear with me baby

So his argument was that Little Bill had been running the town and keeping everything steady for a long time, it was the Wild Wild West (chicky chicky) and a safe town with someone in charge was an important thing.
There were all of the farmers and the shopkeepers and the general workers who relied on the fact that Gene Hackman was in charge and people couldn’t just show up and rob everyone. And near the colonial frontier it’s not some theoretical, if you don’t have a Little Bill who knows what will happen?
And he’s pitted against Clint, sorry William Munny. A guy who was this legend because for whatever reason he was impossible to kill and had killed an unimaginable amount of people. He had made money from it and tried to start a farm but had failed and was just living in a shitty house skint doing anything except shooting people. A real miserable son of a bitch lol

‘Howay the Toon’ Clint Eastwood’

I mean what happens to the town after the film?

But the order that he retained failed and he did nothing

This is the meat and bones of it. It was not a safe town, it was rough as hell. William Munny and his guys turned up because the prostitutes had saved up to put out a bounty. Some fake gunslinger also turned up in town, he probably had killed a load of people, but he was useless.
This is the point that I was making. The Duke of Death probably had done that once by accident, some idiot was terrorising the town and he killed him and get free wine and food forever. But this was man stuff.
And that woman was scarred by a gang, and it wasn’t something that happened once, if something happens once it’s a thing that happens. This was a thing that got to a point where William Munny shows up.
Not the ill kid who is just mercilessly killing people, this old tired William Munny who really doesn’t want to be there.

The system is the problem

So sorry Liam. Gene Hackman deserved everything he fucking got. And his dumb bitch wife

But to be real. I think that the film was really more just a kind of sad story to make you appreciate life. But also be pissed off that not everyone gets to.
I don’t know if Clint is a Shakespeare guy, but it’s in that same vein of tragedy how we are in a story that we are not writing

Here’s Clint talking to a chair
