A bit of a departure from the ‘drunk again?’ stuff I’ve been posting. This is about ‘The Dead Internet’.
I’ll explain the theory briefly and I’ve left a very cool video at the bottom of the page which explains it much better than I can, this is because I want you to watch this really scary video that made me have a nightmare (really, no joke).
So ‘Dead Internet Theory’ is the idea that there are so many bots and fake pieces of content on the internet that we never actually meet anybody online anymore. Like it’s about 10 years old but its at least half true now, when you go on Facebook or Twitter or whatever, except for people who you know so many of the pages and comments are just repetetive and are just the same things repeated, same with YouTube, if you leave it on auto select you keep running into AI stuff or real people repeating the same thing.
The video is this YouTube debater called ‘Destiny’. He’s very famous in that world, he is this liberal American guy who talks really fast, seems to have read all of Wikipedia and interjects with way too sarcastic commentary. I don’t like him, I don’t like any of them.
But in the video he finds this very weird account that has been attacking him on Twitter and starts researching the person behind it, and it takes a very dark turn. It’s brilliantly edited by someone as well.
I won’t spoil it, it’s only 10 minutes, it is weird rather than violent or gross or anything, so please watch it, but I did warn you….
Woah! Eh?
So anyway, I’ll do a quick ramble about it, leave the one below and get out of your hair.
I actually had this thought in 2016 that is kind of related, I got sucked into the incredibly depressing news stories of that time with Brexit and Trump and because I was just drinking so much in those days I was arguing a lot online, and I did get this weird thought which I think is related to this on a different tangent.
So how I felt, was like in 00s internet you would get those viruses from downloading films or looking at rude videos and so on and they would make your computer run slowly and send you to websites and give you pop ups and so on, I felt like that was happening to my brain. Like I had been hacked and wasn’t running properly.
Looking back, I mean it was kind of true just in that I had a terrible ‘diet’ in that I was spending loads of time arguing with stupid people and reading and watching aggravating stuff. I also fell into that hole a bit of believing that if Trump won then there would be a huge war, and I kind of knew that he would win, it was still a surprise when it happened, but it was in the air.
Thank God that he was voted out in 2020 and there aren’t any huge wars *ironic look*
I also have another related thought about all of this, one thing I remember from way back in the day was a story about this thing called ‘Stuxxnet’ which I can’t remember if Israel designed it to attack Iran or Iran designed it to attack Israel, but it was the ultimate virus. The idea was that it was self replicating so once it was on your system you couldn’t get rid of it because it could replicate so it was just generating an endless supply of itself and you just had to throw your computer into the sea.
I may be misremembering, but I’m sure that you can guess what happened, the virus escaped onto the World Wide Web and then it just kept growing and as far as anyone knows it just lives there. It is weird how even the internet is like that, like it doesn’t matter what you do really, everything eventually jsut decays and slows down and dies. haha lovely.
Ok, I’ll leave you with a silly picture and the video below. I’m trying to be sober again and I’m back to studying on a real university course so hopefully more sober writing and less gibberish which seems funny to me, but I dunno, I can’t imagine reading someone else just wittering on drunkenly about the 1990s
