I saw a documentary the other day about PM Dawn. It’s weird, like they were one of those groups who did one album and then went right off, but you can still listen to their stuff and it still sounds lush
Anyway the story is also pretty common. I’ll retell it from memory and then post the documentary.
So the fat guy was a musical prodigy. He was a great singer, and he was obsessed with pop. I always love these guys because I love music, but I have really bad ears, like I am shit at singing and like really obvious stuff as well
Him and his pals put it together, like it was all based on him, but he was one of those artist guys, like if he didn’t have his pals, he’d just be sat in his house his whole life eating and being really good at a shit electric piano.
But they did the one his wonder thing. Set Adrift was huge, went around the world, they got to go around the world and do all of the big shows, the talented guy thought he was a genius and they made a not as good second album.
The interesting bit is that his uncle is still touring calling himself PM Dawn and everyone else from the group hates him.
Why did I write this story?
I think it’s the whole thing how the world is littered with the bodies of artists. Like there are millions of these people, I might be one. Like he had the musical brain and it seems that a lot of African Americans just get this training in those churches as part of their education where it’s that soul music. My dad said Spain was like that when he used to go a lot in the 60s, like I have had a lot of Spanish friends (more than 5) and they are always having some special day, but apparently like the songs.
And this stuff didn’t come out of the churches, the churches came out of the people. Like under Fascism a lot of stuff was banned, so the Spanish had to go to church to have parties, that was probably Jeezy’s plan all along.
I can’t remember who the quote is from but it’s one of my favourite quotes how you need crap to grow roses. Now I’m not saying PM Dawn were crap, at all, but this kind of popular culture, maybe banal, it’s only cos I was a kid that I like those songs, I just wouldn’t have heard them if I were younger or older, but it’s not high art.
But it is part of this big thingthat turned into something else. And whenever you make anything that you like enough to put out into the world, it probably won’t be a hit, but it may go into somewhere and come out somewhere else
Wey aye man
