Honestly, I think that I said last post that I was going to start posting more political stuff because it was so important and it was silly to pretend that it doesn’t exist, but then with all of the news this week, I just feel so disengaged.
So the big news story as I post is that Donald Trump is putting punitive tariffs on all of the other rich countries, that makes no sense to me. I know it’s a really outdated Millenial thing to say, but ‘I can’t even’.
I do not care about Donald Trump, I don’t find him scary or evil, just really really fucking boring. I predict that it won’t actually go through,there will be this stunt, there will be meetings, and nothing much will happen. It’s just him clowning about. I remember when I lived in Korea when I was there a couple of months North Korea declared war on the South or something, and my parent were really worried, and I was worried. And the Koreans I worked with just said ‘No, they do this about twice a year, they just want some more money’.
Stuff does change over time, and these kind of stunts are indicative of a general decline, but these things happen slowly. Maybe that’s just because I live a nice sheltered life in a safe country, but I do, so what can I do?
The other thing is the AI, I found that hilarious to be honest. There’s a guy called Ed Zitron who writes about it, this is very interesting and another thing that I will say I will write in depth about but won’t. Wor Ed makes a great point though. The reason that the Chinese made an AI so much cheaper than the US one? Not some Chinese magic, it’s because the US model is all based on size.
This also applies to why Google and Facebook and everything are rubbish now, it’s that classic economics thing, these companies are run by smart people and are doing what they are supposed to, but we just have it wrong what they are trying to do.
They are not trying to build AI or make the internet better, they are trying to achieve infinite growth, the AI debacle is a cartoon of this. The reason that the Chinese came up with a $10m version better than the US $100b version is not because the Chinese are so smart, it’s because the USA is so deeply uncompetitive, these companies are not trying to make better stuff, they are just trying to get investment. It’s all very cartoonish and silly
