And people from real life go ‘who are you?’
And they hear about some of the stupid stuff I wrote on the internet
Or just someone I knew for a short time
when I lived somewhere by accident
and they’d go ‘we should have done this while he was alive’
‘what, get together and say why we liked him?’
‘no, burned him’
Ok so this post I am going to make sober, because the last couple have been very low class. I started off well and have had a bit of a lapse.
This is another kind of serious point, I have not seen it discussed much in this very much discussed online internet politics world. Don’t worry, I’m not going to go into politics, this is just an observation about the commentary. I’ll try to make it short, but don’t get your hopes up.
So I am addicted to the usually boring commentaries on YouTube where people just sit and rant their opinions for hours, usually they are nauseating, but I thought this was me being a lonely geek doing this while I clean my kitchen, or do work that doesn’t need my brain etc. I thought it was an internet geek thing, but these people are huge.
Now I thought that I was a weirdo because I live out in Asia and have been doing this for about 15 years, I used to just listen to music, but then cos I don’t hear much English, I enjoyed listening to radio style stuff. And I will say that there was a kind of Golden Age in the USA.
Now it’s all horribly dated, and was pretty retrogressive at the time. There was plenty of commentary 10, actually even 20 years ago it was mainstream, like all of that 20th century stuff like racism, homophobia, sexism, you know the drill. Like I grew up in North England and it was pretty acceptable, but then it definitely just became wrong, and you can’t actually make an argument, but there was also the backlash, this is all bread and butter still going on, I am just explaining, because at the time I discovered these shows like Opie and Anthony and Joe Rogan where they were just trying to be funny, and often were, but they were also pretty comfortable just being obscene and nasty, if it was funny. These shows were stacked with high profile American comedians, they were all guys with about 20 years coming up through the clubs, so they were weird guys.
This was also when these household names like Bill Burr, Louis CK and Dave Chappelle were getting their flowers and were at the skill level and known enough to actually make good points and represent that.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, that was a thing at the time which I thought was me being nerdy.
Anyway, in 2013 it kind of was, but I’ve now set up my point. I’m like Christopher Nolan, I just make you go through loads of set up for a pay off which just can’t live up to the set up, because the questions don’t have answers.
Ok so it all came to a head in 2020, when Joe Rogan got 200m for 2 years as the face of a huge European corporation if you hadn’t heard of him you would have. This stuff was all very mainstream by then anyway, Donald Trump in 2016 was probably the ‘coming out party’ where the internet became the new mainstream media. Thinking about it that might have been why I sank into depression at that time. Like everyone thought that since I was online all of the time since about 2004 there must be some secret knowledge that I knew that they didn’t, but there wasn’t, we were just Nathan Barley’s who were slightly advanced consumers, but our ideas were ghosts.
But anyway, back to the clock, still she ticks.
This is all 10 years ago, Bro Brogan is now world famous as a twat, he seems to be a high functioning alcoholic, he records himself podcasting about 5 hours a day, drinking, and then drinks in his time off. He’s seen by liberals and leftists as a far right enabler, and his soft right fans all hate him because he’s so corporate and bloated and drunk.
There is a whole genre of stuff on YouTube where people just rip on him, even the mainstream will rip on him if he actually makes any sense and hits on a relevant topic. And he’s just the dumb guy from the group of his friends who have done way too well.
But to the title. That is all done, the audience is aging people like me, that whole thing, it’s aged out, and it’s still going.
Let me go on another tnagent. When I was a teenager, David Bowie was seen as a wanker. Our parents thought all of these 60s guys were cool, but when we grew up they were these tired drained people, a lot of them still drinking and taking coke and heroin, they were in their 40s and 50s, the songs they released were terrible, as we turned into teenagers and the people who we liked emerged thet tried to glom onto it.
And lets face it, a lot of the songs are the same song. Punks got that right, this stuff is important because it’s easy, there’s a reason that Jonny Rotten still hates everyone, they still offer him money to sing Sex Pistols songs, Se Pistols was a clever thing invented by fashion and media people. He did to his credit actually try with PiL and did ok, but everyone wants to talk about when he was 20, of course he hates the world..
And that is what this whole ‘truth teller’ thing is like. It’s like Star Wars as well, it’s not universal. It was an amazing thing that happened, and it was so amazing that it lasted years, but it’s dead. It’s like when you are at a party and young and you have this amazing joke and the whole thing is just insane and you are all in this collective awe. And then next day you are sober and the joke is just very primitive and shit. It’s a Djinn
God man, I’m doing an MsC this year, I am going to have to learn to write properly. When I did a BA I always did this and then I would have about 30% of it done once I read it back
Now it’s like they are all kind of the same, there are these two silly moves conservatives do, the big mistake is to buy an expensive studio to do these videos from and they do two things they either
a) make it look like some well off middle class guys basement. like his kids are teenagers now, him and his wife are pretty chill, but his fun is now to have a couple of mates over, faux red brick wall, neon sign, have a few drinks and have a smart conversation, now it’s just us….
b) make it look like the BBC news in the 1990s when it was serious, like not flashy, but serious, because the money is going on an amazing news operation
Conservatives suck so much lol.
