Placebo by Placebo

I’m going to do another album review of a rock album that I had a loop as a youngster. Probably get bored and start talking about other stuff in the middle. I keep telling TangrerineDream, the whole point of this is just to write random stuff. This might turn into a series, who knows? some of the crap I enjoy it’s terrible ideas like this but they just keep doing it in spite of it all and one day someone finds it by accident and goes ‘this is interesting’ and it all came out of your mind filtering the universe in such a subjective way that it’s beautiful.

He has a proper job and a family though which I don’t so I get it. Who the hell wants to spend an hour writing about sort of interesting indie pop band from the late 90s with their free time?

Me! That’s who. Let’s go. Put on your eyeliner and charity shop clothes, it’s a Placebo review time

Come Home

This song legit rocks. They are not actually good musicians but they play to their strengths. Every sky is blue, but not for me and you. I’m actually quite excited now, I used to love this album. Weirdly there is just no bass at all, maybe that’s because my music I always want too much bass, but they have mastered this where the bass is not there.

But still, this is a great song, free association lyrics, spiky guitar stabs. They put a lot of bass in the bridge. ‘Give a monkey half a brain and still he’s bound to fry it’

that Sheila’s a bloody bloke!

This is way more fun that reviewing The Strokes, like the Strokes are kind of better at music, but this is a lot of fun.

Teenage Angst

The pop song. Well Brian you did it again. Can you believe he’s called Brian? lol Like Brian is what you’d call a cartoon snail, he’s like a sex pixie, big mistake there.

I didn’t like your last album Brian

This song absolutely rocks. Like there are rules to pop music, they put the bass in this one properly as well. I don’t know how to do it and I probably couldn’t if I tried, but it’s definitely a bunch of rule. Verse Chorus Verse. the lyrics have to match the notes.

I was actually enjoying that so much I am now on the next song which is pretty bland. They are just doing the sound which they are good at but there is not really a song. Harder Faster none of you make the grade. I mean that’s nothing. Doubts are starting to creep in

this won’t end well

Let’s keep going. I remember it’s a short album and there are a lot of good songs on. Like I was flaming The Strokes, but the first album was completely solid, I put it up there with the first film of The Matrix. Like they got everything including bands like Placebo, and just put it all through highly trained people

36 Degrees

Yes this is another of the great ones. I still know all of the words to this one. He was good at lyrics was Brian. This song just rocks, like I get why they didn’t last, it is just one thing, but they really did get that thing perfectly. That’s a 10 for me Brian

Hold on to your IQ

I think that this album may have ruined me. The lyrics are kind of nonsense, but I get what he’s saying, We kind of get lost along the way, like you are young and you have this role and then suddenly you are in the real world and you have millions of roles and you aren’t allowed any of the ones you want.

This is going really well so far. I didn’t think that I’d enjoy it as much as I am. Like being a 40 year old nerd I could slate it for them just not being musicians. I could probably come up with a joke about his singing, it sounds like if a hamster could talk lol. something like that.

But it’s very earnest and they are legit good. I didn’t like the other ones as much, I mean they just turned into those guys who got everything and got to be rock stars. This has a sadness

It’s not gay if…

Nancy Boy

Oh yeah, this is the big one. Yeah it rocks. Nothing to say really. Shagging and drugs. Still a fun song for shagging and drugs, I bet you could play this to bunch of 20 year olds now and they’d all start taking drugs and shagging

Ok to be honest I’m going to do what I did with The Strokes review. I really like this album but I am bored of it because it’s just young people sexy music and I’m 40 and I want to listen to something else.

I’ll try again at some point. I give this album 7/10. It’s a fun little punk rock album that is done well.

Now lets do the bit after the credits that only idiots know exists.

When I was 17 I went to see Placebo at the Riverside club in Newcastle. They had a song in the charts but they were not famous yet and in those days there was a doorway where they would go after the show and say hi to the fans.
Me and my friend went to tell them that we loved their music and it was a great show. They took a shine to us and asked if we wanted to hang out. They were rock guys a couple of years older than us and very gay coded, we were 17 year olds who lived in the countryside and my friend’s mum had agreed to come and give us a lift home. So there were these rock stars trying to have sex with us, and we were like ‘no his mum is outside so that doesn’t happen lol’

On reflection, it wouldn’t have done any harm to go with them, they are by all accounts nice blokes who used to use drugs too much, but it wasn’t really for me. Very charming though and I was flattered, I’m sure that they didn’t mind. I saw them play in Newcastle about a year later and they were huge by that time and it was a big swarm of people so we didn’t get to say hello to them.

I bet they are gutted

This what he looks like now
